One rainy, Melbourne night in late June, we headed down into the little streets of Collingwood to film our third Train Line Session.
Producer, songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Hayden Calnin, welcomed us into his studio – off the back of his latest single launch – to record an intimate version of said single, ‘Waves’, as well as a very new Market Lane original.
Based in Melbourne, Hayden’s music has explored the realms of everything from folk to downbeat electro. He draws comparisons such as M83, Bon Iver and James Blake. Driven by his storytelling, vocal exploration and cinematic soundscapes, Hayden encomposses that ‘late night’ sound while still creating melody.
From the inception of his musical career, Hayden has received significant international attention, played national and international sold out shows, and toured with the likes of Matt Corby and Tom Odell. His songs have been featured on popular TV shows such as Suits, The 100 and The Vampire Diaries. Fitting, as his musical expression emerged from an initial study of film.
For this recording, we took things back to basics. We focused on raw, organic harmonies, maintaining and, even, enhancing the musical integrity of each song. We were excited to utilise Hayden’s beautiful Steinway for both tunes, reminiscent of days spent in front of a piano with cup of tea, a notebook and a pen. Echoing our songwriting roots, it added a soft yet grounding tone to our typically folk influenced instrumentation. We want to thank Hayden for sharing his space, time and creativity with us.
What an inspiring, busy and refreshing few months it’s been! Just wrapping up our third Train Line Sessions recording and it’s only July! Lots of gigs coming up – see you out there!
Keep your eyes on the skies for the release of our dual song video featuring this collaboration, as part of our Train Line Sessions series.
